Clay and ceramics are part of tradition in Oaxaca: in every town and vicinity there is a different style and several artisans. Unfortunately, the contemporary changes in our society are eroding this knowledge. Only a handful of artisand from newer generations are regenerating clay production.
Any thing unique about them? Yes! They all use natural materials, with no plastic added. In the next lines we introduce you to our selection.
Amando Pedro & family
Amando Pedro is tireless. A clay maker with and old tradition, Amando is always improving to create the best pieces of art, very respectfully from nature. He belongs to the 1050 grados collective of producers. He also has his own brand: “Amando mi tierra”. You can visit in our blog a specific interview.
Eduardo Martínez & family
“Lalo“, as we friendly call him, makes a fusion of the glazing tradition in Atzompa and his own innovations: he mixes soils and colors, originality and made to measure pieces. He works with sculpture as well as he does with minimal utilitarian mugs or dishes, at 4 Elementos, his workshop.
Antonio Ruiz & Carolina Méndez
The Ruiz Méndez family produces in Atzompa, a very famous place for clay. Mr Antonio and his wife Carolina are specialized in a very slim clay called “juguete” or toy, very light and flexible.
