Clay and ceramics The best kept and respected tradicion

Oaxaca is magic and diversity

Clay and ceramics are, doubtless, among the best kept secret in the State: tradition is there, in every town. Multiple artisans are also present, nevertheless, changes in our society have forced part of this knowledge to disappear in some places, while in others new generations regenerate and innovate this activity.

Clay is all but homogenous throughout the State of Oaxaca: black in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Red in Tlapazola, glazed in Atzompa, dotted in Tonaltepec… there is an enormous variety, despite the cultural pressure. Nowadays, as it also happens with other traditional activities, such as mezcal or alebrijes, money and hard capitalism penetrates communities generating very contradictory situations: on one side, it allows to improve some living conditions, on the other, it distorts the original thinking and goals of those places and social groups.

At 6 sentidos we are respectful of the local communities decisions and make an effort to contribute to sustainability, reflection and critical thinking, as locals build new opportunities for their future.

An iconic artisan is José García, an inspiration for many of us, because of his optimism and way of thinking. Visit our channel for more videos.

Teamwork Meet our allies

6 Sentidos began as an initiative oriented to artisans solely. As time went by, we have come to understand that a sum of actors can do much more. In this section, we introduce products from master artisans José García, Amando Pedro and Eduardo Martínez. If you wish to learn more about them, we invite you to visit our allies area.
